Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has been used as an all around natural health solution for thousands of years! And while there are literally an endless number of uses and benefits of ACV, this article will focus on how it can help with something nearly everybody struggles with at some point in their lives; and that’s weight loss. That’s right, apple cider vinegar is a simple at-home aid that might make the weight loss war with yourself just a little bit easier!
First of all, what exactly is apple cider vinegar and why is it so beneficial for your health? Well, apple cider vinegar is made from apples of course! Crushed apples to be exact. Yeast is then added so that the sugars in the apple’s juices convert into alcohol. Next, good bacteria are added to the mixture which ferments the alcohol into acetic acid. That’s the main component of ACV that makes it so special.
Acetic acid is a fatty acid that has been shown to promote weight loss in 3 ways:
- Suppressing Appetite
Studies have shown that compounds in apple cider vinegar act as a sort of natural appetite suppressant. Meaning that when you take it with your meals, it helps you feel fuller, faster. Participants in one study that took apple cider vinegar with a high-carb meal ended up eating 200-275 fewer calories for the rest of the day!
In another study, 144 participants were given either 1 tablespoon of ACV, 2 tablespoons of ACV or a placebo substance daily. After 12 weeks, those that took the placebo actually gained a little weight. On the other hand, those that took 1 tablespoon of ACV lost an average of 2.5 pounds, while those that took 2 tablespoons lost almost 4 pound! - Burning Fat
The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar has been shown to increase the expression of certain genes in the liver (PPARalpha, ACO, CPT-1, and UCP-2 to be exact) that are responsible for the burning of fat in the body. To put it simply, drinking apple cider vinegar improves your body’s natural fat burning capabilities.
For instance, in one study mice were fed a high fat diet. Half of them were given acetic acid daily while the other half were not. In result, the mice that weren’t given acetic acid gained body fat from the high fat diet. But the mice that were given acetic acid did not accumulate any body fat. The researchers concluded that acetic acid suppresses the accumulation of fat on the body by increasing those fat burning liver genes. - Improving Metabolism
The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar has also been shown to increase activated protein kinase (AMPK). A study done on mice showed that administering acetic acid activated AMPK production in the liver.
AMPK is an enzyme that acts as a central integrator of metabolism and mitochondrial homeostasis. In other words, taking acetic acid helps your metabolism to run better on a cellular level! In fact, experts in cell biology refer to AMPK as the “guardian of metabolism and mitochondrial homeostasis.”
- Suppressing Appetite
It’s certainly not a magical weight loss cure-all, and more research still needs to be done. But if you’re struggling to lose weight and your diet and exercise don’t quite seem to be enough, adding apple cider vinegar might be the small aid you need to get moving in the right direction.
As you now know, apple cider vinegar helps suppress your appetite, burn fat and improve your metabolism. So you’re probably wondering how to go about adding it to your diet. Well, ACV has an extremely strong taste. Trust me when I say it might give you a mean sour face and a gut ache if you try to drink it straight.
